AI face matching algorithms are incredibly powerful, but their accuracy depends heavily on the quality of the photo you upload. A poor angle or bad lighting can distort your facial landmarks, leading to inaccurate similarity scores. Follow this guide to prepare the perfect portrait for face scanning.
1. Choose Neutral, Even Lighting
Shadows are the enemy of computer vision. If one side of your face is cast in shadow, the AI might miscalculate the distance between your eyes or the slope of your jawline.
- Best option: Face a natural window during the day. This provides soft, even lighting across both sides of your face.
- Avoid: Overhead ceiling lights that cast dark circles under your eyes, or harsh side-lighting.
2. Keep a Neutral Expression
While we love smiling photos, dramatic expressions alter your facial geometry. Smiling pulls your cheeks up, narrows your eyes, and widens your mouth, which changes your landmark coordinates.
For the most accurate scan, look directly at the camera with a relaxed, neutral expression (similar to a passport photo). This allows the algorithm to map your bone structure in its natural resting state.
3. Camera Angle and Distance
Hold the camera directly at eye level. Taking a photo from a high angle makes your forehead look larger, while a low angle accentuates the chin. Keep the camera about 3 feet away to avoid the lens distortion that happens when you take close-up selfies.
4. Clear the Face
Ensure your hair doesn't cover your eyebrows or the sides of your eyes, as the algorithm uses the brow ridge and eye contours for key measurements. Remove glasses if possible, as reflections can block the eye coordinates.
