Throughout history, there are several well-documented accounts of famous historical figures encountering their own doubles. Unlike modern look-alikes that bring people together, these historical cases were often eerie, unexplained events that became legendary.
1. Percy Bysshe Shelley's Warning
The famous English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley reportedly encountered his doppelgänger several times. In one account, he met his double on a terrace, and the figure asked him, "How long do you mean to be content?"
More chillingly, Shelley's wife, Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein), wrote that Percy saw a vision of his double pointing towards the sea shortly before he tragically drowned in a sailing accident in 1822.
2. Abraham Lincoln's Mirror Vision
Shortly after his election in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was resting on a couch when he looked into a mirror across the room. He saw his face reflected, but with two distinct images—one normal, and one pale, ghostly, and faint.
Lincoln was troubled by the vision and showed it to his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. She interpreted the optical double as a sign that he would be elected to two terms as president, but the pale image meant he would not survive his second term.
3. Catherine the Great's Orders
The powerful Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, reportedly had a chilling encounter in her palace. Her guards alerted her that they had just seen her enter the throne room. Catherine, who was in her private chambers, went to investigate.
Upon entering the throne room, she reportedly saw her own double sitting quietly on the throne. Catherine ordered her guards to fire at the double, but the vision vanished into thin air. She passed away shortly after the incident.
